Mission and Vision

BCIC stands as a beacon of hope and resilience within both the Indigenous and broader community, dedicated to fostering positive change and empowerment. Founded by Steve Fordham, a proud Indigenous leader from Kamilaroi country and recipient of the NSWYoung Achiever of the Year 2020, BCIC began its journey with a vision to address the pressing issues affecting Indigenous individuals and families in the Muswellbrook Hunter region and beyond.

Our story began when Steve our founder, had a powerful moment of realization that shaped his vision for Blackroo Community Indigenous Corporation (BCIC). One Sunday afternoon, while driving down the street, Steve noticed a former inmate—now employed through Steve's company—walking along the street in his work uniform. The man was wearing his orange shirt, work boots, and had his gloves clipped to the side of his jeans.

Steve stopped to offer him a lift and, during their conversation, asked why he was wearing his uniform on a Sunday. The man's response was profound: he explained that when he wore his work uniform into shops, people no longer followed him around suspiciously. He also noticed that older women no longer clutched their bags tightly when he walked past.

This simple yet powerful observation highlighted the dignity and respect that employment and a sense of purpose can bring to an individual's life, reinforcing Steve's commitment to creating opportunities and positive change for Indigenous people through BCIC.

New Beginnings

Understanding the critical need for support and protection, BCIC passionately launched the "New Beginnings" program to aid women and children impacted by domestic violence. Domestic violence is a deeply troubling issue that demands not just support but also privacy to enable survivors to heal and thrive. Too often, women find themselves trapped in harmful situations, unsure of how to take the first steps toward safety without upending their children's lives. This crucial initiative empowers these women by providing a pathway to a secure environment furnished with donated essential items for themselves and their children. It offers compassionate support aimed at helping them rebuild their lives within a nurturing and safe sanctuary.

2NM POWERFM Hunter Valley Christmas Food & Toy Appeal

Blackroo's "Mumma-Roo," De-anne, has been a pillar of support for the underprivileged in Muswellbrook for over 23 years, spearheading the 2NM PowerFM Food and Toy Appeal. Blackroo takes over the Muswellbrook Basketball stadium to pack care packs for families, where numerous volunteers generously contribute toys and their time in the lead-up to Christmas.

In the midst of Australia's current cost-of-living crisis, more families than ever are struggling to meet their basic needs, making this year's Christmas support crucial. Each year, BCIC's initiative continues to expand, making a significant impact during the Christmas period. Last year alone, the appeal sourced over 1600 toys for underprivileged children and provided 400 food hampers to families dealing with financial hardship.

Sharon Finnan-White First Nations Academy of Excellence

The Sharon Finnan-White First Nations Academy of Excellence is a unique program designed to support young Indigenous netballers, and in time other athletes, from regional communities in North Queensland. This program provides holistic support for the mind, body, and environment through netball training, educational and employment support, strength and conditioning, mindset coaching, cultural development, and mentorship. The Academy offers program scholarships and two full residential scholarships in its first year.

This initiative is not just about developing sporting talent but also about providing pathways for young Indigenous women who face challenges due to regional, family, and socio-economic issues that may otherwise limit their opportunities. Our goal is to create a pathway into meaningful careers post-netball, offering inspiration and guidance for future generations of young women.

Facilities such as the John Morony Correctional, Wellington Correctional Centre and Cessnock Correctional Complex are pivotal in manufacturing high-quality products for corporate clients, contributing not only to the rehabilitation of individuals but also to the broader economy. These initiatives are essential in breaking the cycle of recidivism by empowering Indigenous inmates through education, imparting practical skills, and fostering a sense of purpose. By investing in comprehensive training within correctional settings, BCIC aims to reduce reoffending rates and facilitate successful reintegration into society, thereby promoting long-term rehabilitation and societal benefit.
